<p>The Boat Company was formed in Alaska in 1979 by the McIntosh Foundation.  They are a non-profit educational organization offering <a href="http://www.theboatcompany.org/">luxury eco-cruises</a> through Southeast Alaska.  The Boat Company employs skilled and capable crew on their two vessels,  M/V Liseron and M/V Mist Cove.  The eco-cruises feature a ratio of two guests per one crew member; the needs and wishes of each guest can be accommodated without difficulty.</p>
<p>Hikers can spend as much time off the boat as they like – hiking the forest service trails, beach combing the tide flats, walking the stream beds and taking leisurely strolls along the beaches in the company of our trained naturalists.  Fishermen can stream fish or take out skiffs with guides and try their luck.  Canoes and kayaks can explore hidden covers and scenic shorelines.  The objective is to expose guests to the special place that is Southeast Alaska. They also hope to educate more and more people about the benefits of conserving and preserving for future generations one of the Earth&#8217;s last great wild and beautiful places.</p>
<h3>Nature of the Situation</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.theboatcompany.org/" target="_self">The Boat Company</a> had redesigned their website and were interested in boosting search engine results.  They were referred to RevenFlo and came to us with a monthly budget as well as an overall goal to increase traffic to the site and overall web presence.  RevenFlo needed to design and execute a monthly <a href="http://revenflo.com/enterprise/web-solutions-and-services/web-traffic-seo-sem-paid-placement/" target="_self"><strong>SEO Program</strong></a> that would deliver results and reach the desired audience.</p>

Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings. &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.</em><br />

<h3>Nature of the Solution</h3>
<p>The RevenFlo <a href="http://revenflo.com/enterprise/web-solutions-and-services/web-team-management/" target="_self"><strong>web team</strong></a> had lengthy conversations with The Boat Company to develop a clear understanding of their goals and objectives.  They wanted better positioning as an eco-friendly, non-profit organization.  The first thing we did was come up with a list of targeted terms that The Boat Company wanted to show up for in search results.  Once the terms were identified, we engaged in link building to garner the search engine and search placement results our client was seeking.  The primary tactic the web team employed in this SEO campaign is link building.  There are several tactics RevenFlo engages in for link building efforts.  It is important to work with web savvy individuals that understand your objectives and are able to qualify and quantify the results of their SEO strategy</p>
<h3>The Results</h3>
<p>The campaign has delivered some powerful results.  Traffic to the site is up 65% from the year prior.  We have seen a 77% increase in people finding the website in search results as opposed to last year.  The Boat Company has achieved number one on search engine results for keywords as well as numerous first page search results for predetermined keywords.  As of November 2010, the <a href="http://www.theboatcompany.org/schedule.php" target="_self">2011 bookings</a> are 43% sold out!  The Boat Company has already budgeted the  SEO monthly program into their 2011 figures.  We look forward to continued improvement and growth on their search engine results and web visits.</p>

<p>Perhaps you read the articles we post about <a href="http://revenflo.com/5-easy-tips-for-an-effective-business-blog/" target="_self">blogging</a> and content creation.  There are a lot of good tips and guidelines for generating good content that people will share.  In some cases, content creators follow the guidelines and advice from all the pros but fail to get any comments or sharing from readers.  <span id="more-4601"></span>There are several reasons that your content could be failing to generate the buzz you were hoping for.</p>
<h3>Outdated Web Design</h3>
<p>If your website is outdated or looks outdated, you will not build trust.  If the design on your site is not current and appealing you will struggle to build credibility.  People will not be inclined to share information that is on a website that looks questionable.  As you begin to blog and publish more content, be sure that your site looks current and reflects your brand.</p>
<h3>Product Heavy Content</h3>
<p>If you are writing about your product and singing it&#8217;s praises then you are on the wrong track.  In most cases, people do not care about the product.  Instead, people care about having their problems solved, getting answers to questions and learning more bout a particular topic.  People are far more inclined to share a solution or the answer to a question.</p>
<h3>Sterile Content</h3>
<p>Now if you just start posting information and addressing common questions, that can be unappealing as well.  It is important to inject your personality into your content.  The more you write the more comfortable you will be.  If you have a great sense of humor then let it show from time to time.  People want information but everyone enjoys a good laugh of a personal anecdote.</p>
<h3>Did You Tell Anyone?</h3>
<p>How did you promote your content?  Sis you share it with social networking sites, clients, friends, etc?  Many people neglect to promote their content and wonder why they do not get a better response.  You have to network in life and that applies to your online content as well.  Take a look at your connections and where you spend your time online and create a list of people and sites that you should be sharing with.</p>
<h3>And Now You Know</h3>
<p>As with anything in life, it takes time and commitment to build a following.  Pay attention to your audience and take note of what posts they seem to enjoy and share the most.  Work hard, be authentic and post regularly.  There is great benefit to building an online community that will follow your blog and share your posts.  It increases your brand awareness and ultimately could lead to revenue.  Is there something we forgot to mention?  Share with us please!</p>

<p>A lot of people come to our office and are interested in improved search engine presence.  Business owners want to be on the first page in a Google search.  Naturally there are other search engines but most people use Google when conducting a search.  If you are interested in how to increase your ranking outside of PPC activities, blogging is one of the best ways.<span id="more-4575"></span></p>
<p>We have written about blogging and provided tips and info on content creation in more than one post.  This is not new information as much as it is important information.  The more relevant and timely content you publish, the greater your chances are of being &#8220;found&#8221;.   A blog allows you to add naturally occurring keyword infused pages.  Blogging also increases the potential for incoming links from high quality websites.</p>
<h3>How a Blog Post Can Change Your Website</h3>
<p>Blogging is a dynamic activity that allows you to make changes and updates to your site frequently.  A static website with eight pages of rarely updated information is passe&#8217; and does &#8216;nt do squat to improve your ranking.  Letting go of a dinosaur static site is not a bad thing.  Lets assume you have three employees who can blog once a week about their area of expertise.  Within a year you will have a minimum of 156 additional indexed pages.  Each time a new post is added, an additional page is indexed with the search engine.  This moves you up organically and increases the probability that people will find you through keyword searches.  If you apply the law of probability, it is evident that you increase your chances with each content specific and keyword infused post.</p>
<h3>You Blogging Gets Noticed</h3>
<p>So you have the blogging software in place and committed staff members that publish regular content. Over time there are more indexed pages and you see your search engine presence improving.  Another added benefit?  Linking!  The more relevant and information you publish the greater the chance is that people will link to your site and share your blog posts.  Incoming links validate your site and the content you are posting.  Search engines link incoming links and reward you with better search engine visibility.</p>
<h3>It is Important to Use Keywords and Key Terms</h3>
<p>Be sure to blog with intention!  When you write be sure that you are sticking to topics and content that relate to your product, service, etc.  The more you integrate key words and key terms, the more likely it is that you will reach your desired audience.  Once you attract the right audience, the intention is that they will share the relevant and informative content you have posted.  The more targeted you are with your message, the better your results will be.</p>
<h3>Incorporate the Blog Into Your Site</h3>
<p>If you do not have an open source site with a blogging platform, you really need to take this into account.  If you want to improve search engine results for your main website, you need a call to action or directive that sends the reader to your regular site.  If possible, keep your blog on the same domain and provide links that encourage people to visit other portions of your site.  Above all else, keep it simple for your readers!</p>
