CPCC is a comprehensive college that advances the life-long educational development of students consistent with their needs, interests, and abilities while strengthening the economic, social, and cultural life of its diverse community. The College provides high caliber, flexible pre-baccalaureate and career-focused educational programs and services which are academically, geographically, and financially accessible.

CPCC was established in 1963 when Mecklenburg College and the Central Industrial Education Center were merged. The college was one of the first of the 58 colleges in the NC Community College System.  CPCC was fully accredited to award associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates in 1969 by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Today, many of its programs have special accreditation as well. In 1969, it became a member of the League for Innovation in Community Colleges and has been identified as one of the top five of the nation’s two-year colleges in teaching excellence.

Nature of the Situation

CPCC was looking for a more effective way to display their content in the design and system that they already had.

When CPCC approached the RevenFlo Web Team seeking a solution, they felt that their own site lacked cohesion and did not always provide the critical information that prospects and students were seeking… they sought to improve they way in which they presented and managed content.  There were budgetary constraints (of course) and the solution had to be compatible with the existing technology and staff organization.  The solution that the college was seeking needed to be modular in design, allowing it to be reused with ease.

Nature of the Solution

RevenFlo proposed a template content design solution.  This involved creating one content design template with modular components that could be customized for each page.  The web team created the design vocabulary and optimized the content for search engines. We included such features as testimonials and incorporated a “related classes” element as a guide.

The solution was a “modular template” for organizing a page of content based its content type (a department, a single class, etc.).

In addition to the design template, RevenFlo worked with a few of the implementation staff members to work through some issues together. CPCC then took it from there and have implemented it internally.

Summary

The end result is a more effective content design that allows users to find information with ease, and to engage them in the “product” and its world.  The modular design gives CPCC a guide to follow as they move forward with changing individual pages.  The college staff is able to make the changes internally and can call on RevenFlo as needs arise.

We worked with Eric Storm and his marketing consultant to build a powerful web communications and marketing solution.  We used the open source content management system, WordPress. We found a well designed, well developed widget-ready theme (or user-interface and “skin” for the technology) built by a group called NattyWP.  We worked with the Eric Storm Team to establish appropriate hosting with a national provider, select and implement an appropriate technology, integrate an effective design theme, and to organize and publish content.  We also trained the Eric Storm Mortgage Team to utilize their new tool to publish content and encourage visitors and interactivity. A fully operational database-driven members communications system was the primary objective of Phase I. In terms of public experience, we built a small place holder site. Phase II is about building out the public side to enable marketing communications efforts.

With unique and singular strategic design and architecture plans, we customized Drupal (an open source content management system) and a plugin designed for such types of membership communications to create the current system.
